the list for Italy

Vicente del Bosque has revealed the list for the upcoming friendly against Italy on March 5 in the Vicente Calderón (Madrid).  This is the last time La Roja will get together before the concentración for the World Cup begins on May 26.  The list was announced at the headquarters of the AFE (the Association of Spanish Footballers; Iker Casillas, David Villa, Gerard Piqué and Carlos Marchena are current vice presidents), as the game will benefit the association.

Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas, Pepe Reina, Víctor Valdés.

Defenders: Juanfran Torres, Sergio Ramos, Jordi Alba, César Azpilicueta, Raúl Albiol.

Midfielders: Javi Martínez, Xabi Alonso, Sergio Busquets, Xavi Hernández, Koke Resurrección, Thiago Alcántara, Andrés Iniesta, Jesús Navas, Santi Cazorla, Cesc Fàbregas, David Silva.

Forwards: Diego Costa, Pedro Rodríguez, Álvaro Negredo.

This is the second time that Diego Costa has been called up, but he missed the games against Equatorial Guinea and South Africa due to injury.  Meanwhile, Thiago (“he’s playing very well with his club”) and Azpi (“he’s doing very well with Chelsea and we want to observe him up close, his versatility is good for us because he can play on both sides”) are returning after absences (yay for the latter!).  The concentración for this game begins on Monday at 10h.  The players will film a series of ads for the World Cup, and on Tuesday they will train at the Vicente Calderón.

The game against Italy will serve as a tribute to the late Luis Aragonés.

Looking ahead, the next time Vicente del Bosque announces a list will be on May 13.  This will be the preliminary list of 30 players for the World Cup.  On May 25, the final list of 23 players will be revealed.

The U-21 team also has a game during this international break, a friendly against Germany on March 4 in the Nueva Balastera (Palencia).

Goalkeepers: Fernando Pacheco, Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Defenders: Sergi Gómez, Dani Carvajal, Jordi Amat, Derik Osede, Juan Bernat, Alberto Moreno.

Midfielders: Sergi Roberto, Isco Alarcón, Gerard Deulofeu, Pablo Sarabia, Rubén Pardo, Denis Suárez, Saúl Ñíguez.

Forwards: Iker Muniain, Jesé Rodríguez, Álvaro Morata.

Isco and Alberto Moreno make a return to the U-21 side after having played several games with the senior team (Koke is still eligible to be called up for the U-21 team as well), while for Denis Suárez, this is his first-ever call-up.

  1. You know who else is playing very well for his club? Jose Callejon. I guess he’s not that young, though.I suppose VDB has a tough job to chose from such a talented list of players. I love the team that won the World Cup and the Euros together, but it may be time for some younger players to move up.
