all set for Ecuador!
I don’t have time for a proper post (sorry), so here’s a very brief one on tonight’s game against Ecuador (22h). This is only the second time that Spain has faced Ecuador – the first time was a friendly back in 2003 in Madrid. Spain won that game 4-0 behind one goal from Javier de Pedro and a hat trick from Fernando Morientes (“Morientres”). Iker is the only player called up for tonight’s game that also played a decade ago.
The call-up list was announced last week, and consisted of:
Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas, Pepe Reina, Víctor Valdés.
Defenders: Álvaro Arbeloa, César Azpilicueta, Iñigo Martínez, Raúl Albiol, Sergio Ramos, Jordi Alba.
Midfielders: Javi Martínez, Santi Cazorla, Andrés Iniesta, Isco Alarcón, Thiago Alcantara, Koke Resurrección, Jesús Navas, David Silva, Cesc Fàbregas*.
Forwards: Álvaro Negredo, Fernando Llorente, Cristian Tello.
* Cesc was subsequently dropped from the list due to a right ankle sprain. No one was called up to replace him.
Several promotions took place with this list, with Iñigo Martínez, Isco, Thiago, Koke and Tello moving from the most recent U-21 team (the one that won the 2013 U-21 Eurocopa) to the senior team, although several of them – Thiago and Isco – have already debuted with the senior team. As for the other three, this is their first ever call-up. Meanwhile, Negredo and Llorente have returned to the team after long absences.
The concentración began on Monday at Barajas, and the team then flew to Guayaquil. They trained there on Tuesday, and the game will take place today.
Let’s go La Roja!
