the list for Finland and France

Vicente del Bosque has announced the list of players called up for the upcoming 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Finland (March 22 in Gijón) and France (March 26 in Paris).

Goalkeepers: Víctor Valdés, Pepe Reina, David de Gea.

Defenders: Álvaro Arbeloa, Raúl Albiol, Sergio Ramos, César Azpilicueta, Gerard Piqué, Nacho Monreal, Jordi Alba.

Midfielders: Xabi Alonso, Xavi Hernández, Andrés Iniesta, Cesc Fàbregas, Sergio Busquets, Santi Cazorla, Javi García, Isco Alarcón, David Silva, Juan Mata, Jesús Navas.

Forwards: David Villa, Pedro Rodríguez, Álvaro Negredo.

The concentración begins on March 19 (Tuesday) at 10:30h.

Thoughts on the list?

VDB said, “this list has some peculiarities, as players such as Casillas, Torres or Puyol are absent, and this is unusual.  Javi Martínez hasn’t played well and that’s why he’s not coming.  When he begins to play well, he’ll be important for us.  I have been in contact with Puyol, he wanted to come, but he has some pain and we preferred not to call him up because he’s not in the best condition.  Fernando Torres is in the same situation as Javi, we’re not sure that he should be called up and that’s why we didn’t call him up.”

And for all you La Roja fans in the United States, according to Marca, Spain will be taking on Northern Ireland on June 6 in New Jersey (Red Bull Arena), and Haiti on June 11 in Fort Lauderdale (Lockhart Stadium), in warm-up games for the Confederations Cup.  Is anyone planning on going?

Meanwhile, Julen Lopetegui has called up the following players for the U-21 team’s friendlies against Norway (Estadio Municipal Salto de Caballo, Toledo, March 21, 20:30h) and Russia (Estadio Municipal Santo Domingo, Alcorcón, March 25, 20:30h).

Goalkeepers: Diego Mariño, Joel Robles.

Defenders: Martín Montoya, Carles Planas, Marc Bartra, Marc Muniesa, Nacho Fernández, Iñigo Martínez, Jordi Amat.

Midfielders: Koke Resurrección, Thiago Alcántara, Juan Carlos Pérez, Pablo Sarabia, Nacho Camacho, Asier Illarramendi, Sergio Canales

Forwards: Iker Muniain, Cristian Tello, Rodrigo Moreno, Álvaro Vázquez

The team will begin its concentración on March 18 at 13h.

  1. aww sorry about Javi, Una :( – my heart goes to Nando, who played better last night but not enough to make it past the rest of these amazing choices.

Still weird to not see Iker’s name, and Puyol’s!

thanks for the post as always!! <3

  2. La Roja will be playing at Red Bull arena? If so, I’m there! I’ll have to look for tickets!

My thoughts on the list…is Javi Martinez out of favor instead of not playing well? Surprised to see him not there and to see Albiol who doesn’t play as much… Diego Lopez has been in good form, no? Thought maybe he would get a shot.

I still miss Llorente and his tight shirts!

  3. Hi Una:) Thank you for your post:) I heard that there are new rules that say U21 players can’t be born before 1992 , so I am really glad to see Bartra & Vazquez & Tello and others on the list :)

  4. I like your blog! where you get all the photos? (:

  5. BTW, if Xavi doesn’t play against Finland, with Iker, Puyol, and Torres out, who would be captain? Is it Xabi? Who are the most capped players left besides Xavi, Iker, Puyi, and Torres on the team now?

    • Xabi will be captain. He is actually third among all active players in number of caps, behind Iker and Xavi, and ahead of Puyi and Torres. Iker is at 143, Xavi at 119, Xabi at 106, Torres at 101, Puyol at 100, Sergio Ramos at 99 and David Villa at 86.

  6. I so miss Iker… wish he’ll be back very soon :)

  7. Hi Una! I am very glad to know that Thiago&Bartra&Vazquez and Tello can play, because I heard that there are new rules that only players born in 1992 or later can be called up for u21 :) PS sooo proud to see Isco in seleccion absoluta once again :D

  8. Ahh thanks so much for the info on the US games!! I’ve been to Haiti 3 times for medical mission trips and love Spain NT so I will definitely be going. I graduate medical school in May so that will be a perfect vacation celebration trip!! Thanks and keep posting if you get more info :-)

  9. Thanks so much for the info about the US dates! I will so try to attend!! When will tickets be on sale? Nice to see David Villa back in the squad! Will definitely miss Iker though. Its nice to see David de Gea called up.

  10. Do you know if and when tickets go on sale for the new jersey match?

  11. If Torres isn’t part of the squad when I go see Finland vs. Spain in the autumn i’ll be very, very sad :(

  12. i would LOVE to see la roja play northern ireland (i would personally prefer the republic of ireland, but northern ireland would do!), and will move mountains to be there! hopefully everyone is back in fit and fighting form by then.

  13. I would love to go to Spain vs. Northern Ireland. Where can I get tickets? I checked the Red Bulls Arena site but no dice.
