the list for England & Costa Rica
Vicente del Bosque has called up 23 players for La Roja’s next two games, friendlies against England and Costa Rica on Nov. 12 and Nov. 15, respectively, in London and San José. Other than Jesús Navas and Nacho Monreal returning to the team, there aren’t any other changes from previous call-ups.
Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas, Pepe Reina, Víctor Valdés.
Defenders: Sergio Ramos, Raúl Albiol, Álvaro Arbeloa, Gerard Piqué, Carles Puyol, Jordi Alba, Nacho Monreal.
Midfielders: Cesc, Xavi, Andrés Iniesta, Sergio Busquets, Xabi Alonso, Javi Martínez, Juan Mata, Santi Cazorla, David Silva, Jesús Navas.
Forwards: David Villa, Fernando Llorente, Fernando Torres.
The players are due at the Ciudad de Fútbol on Thursday, Nov. 10 at 10:30h (and Iker can visit his two old friends again; I wonder if he saw them today as well?).
During the press conference, VDB left open the possibility of Sergio Ramos also playing at centerback as he is with his club, said all healthy players would travel to play both games, and revealed that he had spoken to Thiago and they had agreed that on this occasion, his place is with the U-21 team, and that they have a lot of confidence in him, as they do in Jordi Alba as well. The míster added that Nacho and Jesús are returning because they’re playing well, and that “it’s impossible to bring everyone that we want.”
When asked what Iker brings as captain, VDB said, “as the players get older, the best thing they can have is a good attitude towards the group and Casillas has shown his generosity. If we had to highlight something about Iker, it would be the maximum concentration that he has in all games.” As for the presence of Raúl in upcoming RFEF acts, VDB said, “we watched him grow up, we’ve witnessed his fantastic career and he’s there due to his own merits.”
Meanwhile, PF Juan Mata has said he is already joking with club teammates John Terry and Frank Lampard about the England-Spain match, and that Chelsea makes all the new additions to their team get up on a chair and sing a song, and so he chose to sing “Macarena” and they clapped along. As for life in England, he hasn’t gone shopping yet, but has found a couple of Spanish restaurants that he goes to once a week “to not lose the good traditions.”
Jesús Navas responded to the news of his return to La Roja by saying “I’m very excited and I have a lot of desire to be there
with Sergio. I’m always ready to go there, for me this is the biggest thing.” He added that one of his priorities for this season is to make it onto the Eurocopa team.
As for Nacho Monreal, his reaction was the same, as he was “very happy and very proud” to be called up by VDB, saying he’s returning with “a lot of desire and as excited as the first day.” Nacho also said he was happy that several of his club teammates have also been called up by their national teams, including Santi with Spain and Isco with the U-21 team.
