a full first day in the United States
In today’s post: the training session, the press conferences, the Huecco presentation, the latest on La Rojita and why Joan Capdevila was held up by airport security!
The players had time to take a walk around Providence and go shopping throughout the day (they were super easy to spot, as they all wore their La Roja shirts and shorts. On the left we have Álvaro Negredo, Santi Cazorla, Joan Capdevila and Borja Valero taking a morning walk).
In the early afternoon, VDB, Pepe Reina, David Villa and Sergio Ramos attended the presentation of charity project Dame Vida-Soccket with singer Huecco. In the late afternoon, they had a video session, and Vicente del Bosque spoke to the press, as did Fernando Torres and Xabi Alonso. Then it was onto the training session.
Today, the team will sign autographs and pose for pictures at an event organized by Adidas at WeGotSoccer in Foxborough, and the World Cup trophy will be available for fans to pose with. They will also hold a training session at Gillette Stadium. Hopefully some of you who are there will get to see our boys in various sites throughout the day!
Vicente del Bosque will also speak to the press from the Hotel Westin, and after the training session, the coach, Iker and David Villa will attend an awards ceremony to receive the awards for best team in 2010 and best athlete.
The training session
Spain held their first training session on American soil yesterday afternoon, at a field near Gillette Stadium (though the players used the locker room of the stadium), where Spain will play the United States on Saturday. The team did their normal warm-up, jogging, rondos, ball exercises, mini-games…

The press conferences
During the press conference, Xabi talked about how it’s “great news” that football has been able to attract Americans, as the majority of the tickets for the game have been sold: “it’s great news that football has this pulling power, that people want to see their national team as well as us. It’s also great news that football is becoming more popular in this country.” He also said that the team would take this friendly and the next one seriously and with professionalism, and that history (the 2009 Confederations Cup) wouldn’t be repeated, although it was a “good lesson” for them. And of course, the media couldn’t resist from asking Xabi about his relationship with Barcelona’s players, to which Xabi responded, “it’s more of a media issue than our issue.” Very classy, and very Xabi.

Fernando has serious hair issues.
Meanwhile, Fernando Torres expressed confidence in himself, saying that he didn’t even think that he would not be chosen: “I’ve been coming to the national team for years and that wasn’t something that went through my mind.”
At one point, Paloma Antoranz had to reprimand the journalists, because they kept asking club-related questions, despite it being a national team press conference.
And Vicente del Bosque described the atmosphere between the players as “good, and with a lot of desire to play two good games.” He also emphasized that the players don’t have problems with each other, since all that is history: “after the storm comes the calm. The wounds left by the clásicos are healing with the national team. They’re cured.”
He also spoke about the light “makeover” of the team in face of the upcoming Eurocopa, with the addition of Manu del Moral and the re-incorporation of Bruno, Borja Valero and Álvaro Negredo: “Spain doesn’t need a revolution, but it does need a bit of retouching. We’re keeping an eye on those that come from the U-21 team, and how they’ll do in their Euro. Those who have joined us have done well, such as Busquets, Mata and Javi Martínez. Our young players are the best we have.”

The next question was about why Busquets isn’t on the U-21 team, to which VDB responded, “the reason is because Busquets is a senior team player, who will be at the Eurocopa next summer, and not at the Olympics, if the U-21 qualifies. Sergio told me in Lithuania that he wanted to go with the U-21 team, that he wanted to play in London. He did that on the field, with Casillas as a witness. I told him then that I was grateful for his offer, but his place is on the senior team and that he was going to continue with us. Something similar happened with Casillas in his day and now he’s our captain.”
VDB also had kind words for Fernando Hierro: “he’s been a great collaborator and a stupendous boss. His departure hurts me and we’re going to miss him. I did everything possible to convince him to stay, but his decision was affected by some personal issues, so it was out of my hands. Personally, I’m going to suffer his loss in my daily work, but I have to adapt.”
Dame vida
As mentioned previously, Spanish singer Huecco (real name: Iván Sevillano Pérez) presented the “Dame vida-Soccket” project yesterday at the Hotel Westin, which included the music video for the song. The purpose of the project is to unite music and sports to help those who are disadvantaged, and to promote clean energy. Huecco provided the song “Dame vida,” which he wrote, and several Harvard engineers (the women in the picture) provided the “Soccket” side: the Soccket is a soccer ball (notice the play on words) that captures energy whenever it is kicked around. Afterward, a child can connect an LED lamp to the ball to read, study or illuminate their house. Fifteen minutes of play can provide three hours of light. Huecco’s royalties from the song will be used to manufacture the balls.

Vicente del Bosque was present (he appears at the end of the video, asking for your collaboration, as well as heading the ball – in a suit!), as well as the three players that sang and showed off their athletic skills in the video, David Villa, Pepe Reina and Sergio Ramos.
During the press conference, VDB revealed that Iván wanted to be a Real Madrid player, but didn’t make it. He also said all of them were happy to help: Sergio, Pepe and… (he had to look down the table to remember who the third player was – David Villa). Huecco said David actually sang in the video, and David said the project is (of course) “maravilloso” and impressive, and that they had a great time filming the video. Then Huecco spoke about Pepe Reina, the “inventor” of the flamenquito part in the song that goes “lo, lo, lo, lo…” Pepe echoed El Guaje in saying that they were happy to collaborate, and that they feel privileged to provide this power to those who need it. As for Sergio, Huecco said he can do some musical things that even he himself can’t. Sergio said the experience was great and that “they can count on us whenever they want.” Huecco ended with an impromptu performance, but despite his encouragement, the players didn’t sing. Watch a video of their press conference here.

The song is extremely catchy, no? Part of it reminds me of another song, but I can’t figure out which one… And everyone looks great in it! Plus, what a fantastic, innovative idea this ball is!
Social networking
Iker continues to please with his Facebook posts.
Yesterday, his gift to us was a picture of Fernando Llorente (what a person I have in front of me! Fernando Llorente, or as Pepe Reina says, “el camión de la Roja,” sends you all a hug) and another of Zipi and Zape (I spend hours with these two characters and I never get tired of watching them. At least they’re good people! They tell me to send a hug to all of you, especially to Villamarchante and Zaragoza) on the bus. He also found time to share these profound thoughts with us:
on the U.S.: I like American patriotism. Do not go into political issues, I do not care. If I come in and claim to be from here. I like it.
on the 11th anniversary of his debut: 11 years ago today debut for Spain. I am very proud of being in on this computer. Thanks for making me Camacho debut, thanks to the other coaches.
(here’s what he meant to say, translated from the Spanish: 11 years ago, I had the luck of debuting with the national team. It’s not easy to maintain a spot for so much time on the national team, but luckily I have. I’m very proud. It doesn’t seem possible that so many years and so many games have gone by. As of today, I have played 119 games, and this was the first (referring to the picture he posted). I want to thank Camacho for debuting me, and also to Sáez, Aragonés and Del Bosque for continuing to play me.)

La Rojita
The U-21 team continued training at Las Rozas yesterday, while Fernando Hierro hinted that if the team does indeed qualify for the Olympic Games, they’ll take along those players who helped them get there, meaning they won’t be bringing the three overage players that each team is allowed. The federation is also looking to the U-21 team to reinforce the senior team in the future, emulating clubs with their canteras, in order to send a positive message to those younger players. I had a training session photo prepared to use in this post, but I prefer these pictures tweeted by Álvaro Domínguez, so here they are: Álvaro (who is pretty cute himself), adorable Ander and of course, my beloved Javi Martínez (!!!). Look at that smile!!! It’s so !!!
This morning, during the team’s training session, (por favor) Juan Mata suffered a sprain to his left ankle after a collision with Thiago, leading him to abandon the game accompanied by one of the fisios. Mata was then taken to the Clínica Cemtro, where he was diagnosed with a grade 1 sprain, meaning he’ll be out for three days and will miss the friendly against Russia. However, he will be completely recovered by the time the Euro starts.
Meanwhile, the future U-21ers beat Montenegro 3-0 yesterday in the Elite Round, behind two goals from Juanmi and one from MFC Álvaro Borja Morata Martín.
To represent the team, a tweeted picture from Álex Fernández and his roommate Isco Alarcón. Be sure to check out their twitters to see them tease each other – Álex joked that Isco had signed for a team from Uzbekistan and later on that he was going to play for Bolivia’s national team, while Isco claimed that Álex (the nicest guy on La Roja, a great player and a better person) was headed for Russia’s ninth division.
And a cute video from reader Heike about the adorable friendship between MFC (Real Madrid) and Sergi Gómez (Barcelona). In his lovely mumbly voice, MFC says Sergi is “very, very, very, very annoying on the field” which provokes the laughter of Sergi himself. They keep laughing throughout the video and end with a hug.
Joan Capdevila Méndez = Juan Méndez?
Want to know why Joan was detained by immigration upon arrival in the United States? Here’s the story. When his passport was scanned by the computer, an alert came up, because his second last name is Méndez, and there is a person named “Juan Méndez” who is on the U.S.’ black list. Thus, Joan was detained and forced to spend half an hour in a room with security agents to clear up his name. During that time, he was also reprimanded for using his mobile phone. When he finally came out, he got an ovation from those of his teammates who were waiting around. Fernando Torres and one of the equipment managers also had to pass by that room to clear things up. That’s why it took about two hours for the team to pass through airport immigration.

Silly, silly customs officers!!! I’m sure there are at least 10000 people called “Juan Mendez” in Spain and Latin America, but our beloved Joan CRACKDEVILA Mendez is only one in the world… (although there are also many Joan Capdevila’s in Catalunya)… but our Joanet is the one and only, and he’s the hottest Capdevila on this planet – as far as I know, at least ;)
Oh poor Joan! Hehehe, so all the Méndez’s in the world be prepared to be detained by U.S immigration!
God bless Iker and his addiction to Facebook and his use of Google translate. Una, if you pay attention to the comments, he replied to some of them. And there are some really interesting answers – for example : he wants 3 kids! Two girls and a boy! and that he likes the names Alba and Martin for his kids! ( its so strange to see Iker answer those questions)
To all of you who will be at the game- You are so lucky! Take lots of pics!
Really? Which ones does he reply to? I want to read them.
Some (adorable) examples:
and… http://29.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lm77zfOFSU1qzk0r1o1_500.png (What a douche. Grande Iker!!!)
Thanks so much!
I tried to find it for you but I couldn’t because I saw it as a print screen photo on twitter and he posts a lot with lots of comments on each post .He replies to some people who tag him in photos too!
Well, I just found the one where he says he wants 3 kids, here is the link:
Thanks to you too!
Haha a little embarrassment for Juan…
Iker may be already mad about his FB? Neither Sergio or Alvaro is more addicted to their twitters…
I had to read Iker’s post about the US in Spanish to fully understand it. He should lay off the Google Translate, haha.
Oh man Una, so many great things you’ve posted here! To have gone on walks and shopping with the boys (can we give them fashion advice? No more paint splashed jeans and pink for Villa, etc.). Providence is a small enough town to have easily spotted them. If I had known they were staying there instead of Boston, I would have gladly have taken the day off to “stalk” them in Providence. For those going to the training or fan events, enjoy getting to see them and hopefully posing withthem and getting autographs! I’ll be at the game though. Can’t wait!
Love Iker’s posts. The Dame Vida is great, including not only our boys and VDB (who I love is bouncing the ball on his head), but all the players who star in it.
So if the U-21 team make it to London, does that mean Mata and Javi (!!!) won’t get to play in the Eurocup? Cute video of Morata and Sergi Gomez, I can picture Iker and Xavi back in their day as well.
Ja ja ja, still laughing at Joan’s predicament, though I’m glad he got out ok! If not, there would probably be many Con La Roja fans that could vouch for who he is!
oh I feel bad for joan!! but how cute was that he was given an ovation…
oh I would LOVE to know what jokes he had to endure then from his teammates =)
and you have to give props to Iker with his (so-far) diligent FB posts. he’s surpassing his other teammates in terms of network socializing by MILES…
good luck with the game, boys!
(and una, thanks for translating iker’s post… his [google-translated]-english leaves me confuzzled sometimes…)
BTW, I have definitely been impressed by Iker’s FB posts! Although, I wonder why he’s not on Twitter as well since his teammates have made fun of him for being constantly on his phone :).
One question, regarding his post about liking American patriotism and the picture of the American flags that accompanied it, does he like it because in Spain the Spanish flag is only really flown in Madrid but not in other parts of the country? (I assume not in Catalunya, but perhaps other places as well?). Or was it just a general comment?
The big boys are aight, but it’s the young guns who are winning my heart, 140 characters at a time! Álex (who is my own “MFC”) and Isco have been absolutely cracking me up! And just now, Isco’s accusation that “Alex is so lazy that he gets up two hours early so he has more time to do nothing” caused me to choke on my lunch (sadly *not* prepared by Sergi Gómez). Can we get them to give humor lessons to Joan “Not-as-funny-as-he-thinks-he-is” Capdevila, do you think?
The Huecco video is great, but I couldn’t help but laugh at the idea of Pepe “inventing” the “lo, lo, lo” section. I thought that and “lerelerele” was just what you sing when you don’t know the words/don’t care to think of any… RFEF should really think about that covers album! The most interestiing thing, for me, though, was Kun’s dance moves. I’m pretty sure I spent an hour in class yesterday mostly failing to move my hips like that. Wow!
Iker on Facebook is turning out to be an pleasant surprise. I sort of expected him to be boring (I know, I know, blasphemy!) but he’s really been a good sport about it! And his love for his cameraphone is just icing on the already-delicious cake!
Sergi and Álvaro are too cute, but I *always* think YFC sounds like he’s just woken up. It’s perpetual sleepy-voice. And, of course, Javi (!!!) continues to be the most adorkable creature on the planet. <3
(This post is so full of so much good stuff that it's just not possible to say everything I want to say! So I shall just offer a regularly-scheduled "thank you" for the amazingness of this blog, once again!)
Regarding the lo, lo, lo – it’s also used when there are no words – that’s what the fans sing when the Spanish national anthem is played before games.
Ha, filed that under “things I really should know by now.” Thanks! :-p
Trust Capi to be the one who gets detained! I bet he will be trading off that story for ages! Maybe he will get a new nickname, El Terrorista? El Criminal? LOL!
can’t stop playing the video–absolutely LOVE it and the whole concept! It’s helping to ease the pain of knowing that Sergio and Xabi are on the same soil as I am but oh-so-far away:-) You people up in the northeast are SO lucky!!!
Although the article is on the US Team, there some good snippets on La Roja.
Also, I wonder how many of the ticketholders are women :).

“The stylish Spaniards are certainly a crowd draw. Who wouldn’t want to see a side that moves the ball even better than Argentina, which thoroughly flummoxed a helpless United States defense for a half in March? The game will apparently set state attendance records at a venue that hasn’t necessarily drawn that well recently. The U.S. team tends to pop up frequently in Foxboro, Mass., but the last 10 matches at Gillette have averaged just over 18,000 in attendance. Contrast that to the 57,500 tickets already snatched up for Saturday’s clash.”
I’m SO happy to see such a good turn out. If I remember correctly we had a decent turnout for the Argentina match too and it was quite cold then. I’m hoping it’s a good game for both sides.
“It’s also great news that football is becoming more popular in this country” I SO agree Xabi. We have a long way to go yet but at least there’s progress!
” I am very proud of being in on this computer.”
jajaja, lol :D that’s why you can’t rely on google translate x)
I’m sure the players are tired of questions about the relationship between the RM and FCB players by now. :D
The song is really catchy and they all seem to have had a lot of fun making the video. It’s great that all these sports people help out with the cause!
Oh YFC Moratower of the bambi eyes. He’s adorable and a little devil at the same time, how can’t we love him?! I’m looking forward to see how he’ll develop in the future.
Wow…..no offense because I really like your blog and everything, but you really need to stop hating on Fernando Torres. I’ve been reading your blog since the World Cup and almost everytime you post something about him, is negative. Me and a lot of other Spanish National Team fans don’t tink that there’s anything wrong with his appearance or the way he dresses (have you actually ever seen a computer repairman?) so I don’t know what your problem is with him. Is it that he’s often picked before Llorente or Javi (both of whom you seem to love)? Well, it’s ok to feel that way, just don’t express it by hating on other players because honestly, honey, you’re coming off as sounding very opinionated.
I have no problems with Fernando, I don’t hate him, I just believe he hasn’t looked good recently. And yes, I have seen computer repairmen. I don’t hesitate to make fun of any player – I do it all the time for Iker, and I love Iker – that I believe can look better. If I’m sounding very opinionated, as you said, well it’s because it’s my blog and half of this blog, if not more, is my thoughts. If you have a problem with that, it can easily be remedied by not reading the blog.
I really don’t care who’s picked first between him and Llorente (Javi’s no competition because he’s a midfielder), just as long as whoever is picked can contribute to the team.
…just don’t express it by hating on other players because honestly, honey, you’re coming off as sounding very opinionated.
Well it is HER blog, not ESPN.com. LOL! And I think when she makes of fun of their appearances, it’s just all playful banter. It’s just the interwebs honey, lighten up :)
Well, it is Una’s blog so it certainly does represent her opinions. And I think Una’s comments on Fernando are intended to be humorous, she is not shy to criticise other players’ fashion sensibilities (or lackthereof). In short, hey if it bothers you that much, then you have the option to not read it…
Wow! I just love it when people say “no offense” and then go off on a rant that can’t be interpreted as anything other than offensive. lol
As Una said, this is her blog and personally, I love the comments she makes. She doesn’t discriminate between the players and everyone is “fair game”. As Jean says, it’s just playful banter.
And if you’ve read the blog as long as you claim, you would have known that Una also “loves” Iker, who obviously isn’t competing for Torres spot but then neither is Javi (!!!).
lol, it’s her blog. she’s not a reporter/journalist, so any biasness is perfectly fine.
don’t like it, just scroll down or ignore it.
i was thinking the same thing.. not because of the hair and clothes comments, i’m fine with that, you don’t have to find him attractive (i think his hair is gorgeous and he dresses like any other young man would), but ever since his transfer from liverpool i can’t help feeling that even the people from spain who loved him now dislike him, or worse, hate him, and make condesending comments about him. with everything he has to deal with in england, why would he worry about being called for national duty? we’ve all seen how the transfer affected him, and he might be putting a brave face for the press, what do you think being dropped from national team would do to his self-confidence? the worst part is that nobody questioned his presence in the national team when he was at liverpool, even though his form wasn’t all that great then, but now people seem to think that he is the worst player ever who has done nothing for his country and doesn’t deserve the spot, even on the bench. VDB doesn’t put him in that much anyways, so why wouldn’t he at least share the joy of his team mates winning, reunited after such a season..
i’m sorry for making it this long, i guess we love with the same passion, except yours being for javi :)
i really am grateful for your blog cause it gives us insight to the best and the sweetest and most handsome squad in the universe, and hope to still read it when i’m 40! (for the love of football, of course, not creepy, cougar kind of way:))
xo from croatia!
I feel that the speculation over Torres being called up for the national team has more to do with the excellent form some of the other Spain nationals have been in for thier club teams….i.e. Negrado, which is why he was called up. Torres has had a rough year. We all want to see him get back to his earlier form but also like to see other players rewarded for the success they’re having.
standing ovation….thats just soo hilarious
and the picture of albiol and my arbeloa is awesome <3
this is the first time i'm ever posting a comment from months of reading this blog and i'll just like to say its really lovely, thanks for all the posts!!!
I’m with Jennifer — it’s the kids and the twitter banter that’s stealing my heart. Well, and !!! has a good deal to do with it!
Thank you again for a wonderful and informative blog entry, Una!
So sorry about Joan & Torres. :'{ Unfortunately, being so close to Mexico and Caribbean and Central American countries we get some dangerous people (drugs/gangs) with similar last names. Unfortunately, that ruins it for the others with similar names.
I was thinking earlier that I hope they don’t hear any of the racist comments from my fellow Americans directed at Spanish speaking people in the US. As I’m sure you all know, anyone who speaks Spanish or has a Hispanic or Latino name is here illegally, a drug dealer/smuggler, on welfare, in a gang and should be deported. *rolls eyes* It infuriates me to no end.
F. Torres face in the picture with Xabi is priceless! He looks like he just get reprimanded by his father (cough Xabi cough). Guess the name “El Nino” still fits. hahahaha Also glad to see the bromance between Sergio & Fernando is still going strong.
Iker….too funny! He definitely must be using Google Translate or something similar. For some reason, “equipo” is sometimes translated to “computer”. It took me a while to get used to that. Also that “Camas” is “beds” if it’s not capitalized. You’d think that Google could hire someone to help with their Spanish translator program.
ok I had so much to say … but when it got to Joan story … I forgot everything & just started laughing …. *lmao* … I feel bad for him … & Joan not the only one…. I few years ago they had a lil boy on the black list … I think the boy wasn’t more then 8 no less then 4 …
Well I’m glad to know our boys are having fun!!! :)
THANX UNA!!!
just have to say, the “Soccket” idea is simply brilliant! Why hadn’t anyone come up with something like this before AND market it successfully? (that was rhetorical)
i love that music video. Kun had the best rithm. and Thomas was the cutest like him singing the words in spanish
Mmmm….Fernando Llorente!Wow!
I loved the Dame Vida video! Talk about a catchy song! All the ones involved in it looked like they were having so much fun.Who would have known Lahm and Muller had such rythm lol! The looked so cute singing to the words in spanish. Also Pepe Reina, Villa and Ramos looked really nice. And Pepe’s flamenco part totally cracked me up :D
I really liked the interview with Sergi Gomez and Morata! Their friendship is so sweet :) And Morata is so adorkable :3
Una – thanks again for all the pictures and gossip!!
Una- we got so lucky to see some of the boys at the WeGotSoccer in Foxborough – we got autographs from David Villa, David Silva, Arbeloa, Llorente, Santi and Xabi Alonso. I have to say Xabi is truly more handsome and stylish in person than even his fab photos indicate. The players were all super nice – posing with fans and signing autographs and David Villa was the best of all – so patient with every one who wanted to shake his hand and get an autograph. We were a bit disappointed Iniesta, Ramos, Iker and several others did not come to this event but we did get to see them all at training though they disappointed every one by not signing any autographs (unlike the US MNT who trained earlier). The actual game was memorable for how Silva set the field on fire and it was still fun even though Spain clearly was only half trying !! Glad we made the 8 hours drive !!!
I believe only the Adidas-sponsored players were there.
Ah – that makes sense! Thanks!
That sounds so awesome. I wish I could have gone since Villa is my favorite player! Awesome to know how nice they were. I would have died :) to have shaken his hand and gotten his autograph. Not that I wouldn’t mind meeting the others, especially Xabi Alonso and Llorente. Was this event on Friday as well?
Yes, it was Fri morning and we found out only by chance in the last minute – by some fortunate intuition I checked the Boston Globe and saw the event!! I was hoping Villa would be there since he usually shows up at Adidas events. There were three young men from Guatemala ahead of us and when one of them asked Villa to sign his shirt, Villa not only signed but also noticed that the tags were still on and ripped them off. The young man came back with stars in his eyes – not only did he breathe the same air as Villa but Villa actually spoke to and touched him!! :-) Cazorla and Llorente opened the doors of their SUVs to sign autographs and Silva stopped the entire entourage on his way out to sign autographs (his interview ran over and when he came out, he was being rushed by the organizers). Here are some pics from the event –
http://theoriginalwinger.com/2011-06-03-spains-national-team-players-meet-up-with-fans-at-wegotsoccer-in-foxboro-ma. I hope you get a chance to see them soon – it was definately worth getting on the road at 4 AM!
