the king and I(ker)

I love his smile lines.

A couple of anecdotes from the Premios Nacionales del Deporte award ceremony yesterday:

While Iker was conversing with the king, he asked him, “your majesty, can I ask a favor of you?”  Don Juan Carlos nodded, and Iker continued, “Can you sign an autograph for a friend?”  This made the king laugh, probably because although he’s signed millions of state documents, he’s hardly ever asked for his autograph, like Iker is.  Iker explained, “it’s for a friend of mine who asked me for it… you can put ‘For Bici.'”

The king got a royal house employee to bring over some photos, and chose one of them.  While Iker held the photo, the king signed it, writing, “For Bici, with affection from Juan Carlos R” and the date.  “Bici” is the nickname of David López Casillas, Iker’s cousin and close friend, who appeared in this commercial with his famous cousin.  I guess adorableness runs in the family.  Click here to see the photo.

After the impromptu autograph session, the king told Iker, “let’s take a photo together” (and I guess when your king asks something of you, you can’t really decline, can you?).  However, they couldn’t find the official royal house photographer anywhere, so one of the guests used his mobile to capture the moment.  That guest was the subdirector of Marca, so the photo appears on their front page today, along with these anecdotes.

Does the King look at Iker with the same proud papa look that VDB always sports around him? :)

  4. VDB looks like he’s digging his nails on his fingers to stop from kinda snort+laughing like iker…

    both of them = cute:)

  5. Una,

I actually have a question for you. I’ve been looking through your coverage of the World Cup and the interviews that the players gave. During that time period, a lot of English tabloids were publishing alleged interviews with La Roja players who were making controversial comments about Cesc Fabregas. I’m trying to figure out if they were faked. Do you know if the team had a specific policy about when/where/to who the players could give interviews, and if so, do you know of any way that I could determine whether a specific interview was authorized or not? Thanks!

    -Anne

    • I have no idea how it worked with the foreign press during the World Cup.

    • I was also reading those alleged interviews, though I read such interviews mostly after the World Cup, when the players were on vacation. So, I had suspicions about those interviews because
      1. if the players are on vacation in places in Spain like Ibiza how are they talking to English tabloids?
and 2. do the players who are allegedly talking to these tabloids speak English well?

I also remember there was an interview with Puyol in an English tabloid, The Sun I think, in which he allegedly said Cesc was “in a prison” at Arsenal, and Puyol denied it on his website saying that he hadn’t talked to the English press.

So, I don’t know if that helps you but that’s my two cents. Overall I don’t trust English tabloids because they often make up and/or skew stories, even direct quotes, and sometimes even interviews.

      • Margie,

I completely agree. To me, it’s completely obvious that they’re fabricated. But I follow Arsenal in addition to Barca, so it’s really frustrating to me to read all this stuff trashing the players from people who are offended by these fake articles. So I’ve been trying to find a way to be able to give some evidence to prove that they’re fake. So far, no luck though :(

    • That must be frustrating… Although maybe there’s no proof for these articles, there have been many other stories English tabloids that have been proven false and sued though, so people shouldn’t trust any story in those tabloids anyway. Personally I didn’t know that tabloids made quotes and interviews up (though I thought they would make up stories), until l I started following football because of the false quotes and interviews from footballers I found on the internet. It’s frustrating because I know some people will think like I did before and trust a story if it has a quote or an interview in it, because that makes it seem legitimate.

  6. He does have beautiful smile lines! They have so much character and warmth in them. And I don’t think he’ll become “haggard” when he ages, he’ll retain his charm.

  7. he. is. so. PRECIOUS! *swoons*

  8. I love Iker with all my heart. And when I find a new story about him, I’m absolutely certain that he is, beyond a great professional, a wonderful human being. I’m very proud to have him as captain of my team.
