the FIFA gala – the moments

Even if the result was unexpected, yesterday’s gala wasn’t without its moments.  So here is a summary of what happened last night at the FIFA awards gala, which had six of our players – Iker Casillas, David Villa, Andrés Iniesta, Xavi Hernández, Carles Puyol and Gerard Piqué in attendance, as well as the my favorite coach, the one and only Vicente del Bosque.

The Ballon d’Or

Leo Messi beat Andrés Iniesta and Xavi to take home the Ballon d’Or last night in Zürich during the FIFA awards gala.  He received 22.65% of the votes to Andresito’s 17.36% and Xavi’s 16.48%.  As stated previously, I was quite surprised by the result, because I really wanted a Spaniard to win it (not that Messi didn’t deserve it for his merits).  The disillusionment was compounded by the fact that Vicente del Bosque lost out on the coach of the year award to José Mourinho (Mou received 35.92% to VDB’s 33.08% and Pep Guardiola’s 8%).  Really, what else can Spain do to get some recognition?  They won the World Cup!!!!

I think part of the reason we went hope empty-handed is because La Roja is a team, where no individual shines brightly enough to eclipse all others.  And since this is an award for individuals, it can’t take that team intangible into consideration.

As for the actual Ballon d’Or voting, Iker gave his points to Arjen Robben, Wesley “Welly” Sneijder and Cristiano Ronaldo.  Vicente del Bosque parceled his out among Leo Messi, Cristiano and Schweinsteiger.  Meanwhile, in terms of coaches, Iker’s first place vote was invalid.  I’m going to assume that’s because he voted for VDB.  Other interesting notes:  neither Zlatan Ibrahimovic nor Samuel Eto’o, as captains of their respective national teams, voted for either Leo Messi or Pep Guardiola.  They did vote for Iniesta and Xavi.

As stated before, Andrés finished second and Xavi third.  Three others placed in the top 10:  Iker was seventh, Villa eighth and Xabi tenth,  Puyol finished in 11th place.

Reactions

Iker spoke with his heart on his sleeve, saying that he saw the result as a “deception”:  “I would have liked a Spaniard to win it.  It’s a pity because we had a lot of hopes pinned on this important award.  But fortune wasn’t with us and no one was able to accompany Luis Suárez (the only Spaniard to win the award, in 1960).  The World Cup had to mean more, but it’s not up to me.”

Leo had the nice gesture of offering to share the award with Iniesta and Xavi and said they deserved it as much as he did.  Xavi, for his part, said that Messi deserved it, and that “we’ll see what happens next year, you never know what’s going to happen… My life wouldn’t have changed with the award.  I would have continued with the same hopes.”  Meanwhile, Andrés remarked that “Messi was a deserved winner, and we’re content with that.  We were just happy to be here.”

VDB told the press that Messi is a great player and deserves the Ballon’Or, but that his two players are “extraordinary” and that no one was a loser that night.  And once again showing his class, he said that Mourinho was deserving of his award.  Meanwhile, José Mourinho said he felt bad for Sneijder, Cristiano, Casillas, Iniesta and especially Xavi, “whom I have known since he was a kid and who deserved the award for his career.”

The ideal starting XI

We did slightly better with the naming of the FIFA/FIFPro ideal starting XI of 2010, with six players from La Roja:  Gerard Piqué, Carles Puyol, Xavi, Iniesta, David Villa and Iker.  During the ceremony, Iker, Puyol and Piqué were seen whispering with each other (they were all in a row), and at one point Puyol dropped his award.

Several of the players were interviewed at that point, including Iker and Piqué.  Iker spoke in Spanish, while Piqué spoke in English, and VDB watched them with a proud smile on his face.  Iker was asked what he felt when they won the Cup.  His response was “an immense happiness for all Spaniards, and for the group, who is very well represented here.  The victory ended all uncertainties about Spanish football.”  Meanwhile, Geri was queried as to what La Roja’s secret of success is: “I think that one of the most important things is the atmosphere in the dressing room, no?   When you play in the pitch you can see the good relation that we have, and I think that it’s really important for a team, no, that wants to win titles.”

The tweets

Cesc – (self-explanatory).

Sergio – I also want to congratulate all my friends and teammates that formed part of the ideal starting XI.  Congratulations to all of them.

Puyol – Andrés and Xavi also deserved it, they’re great!

Piqué – Congratulations to Leo!  In my opinion, he’s already the greatest (here, grande means great) of all time!

Puyol – (To Piqué) You are also the más grande (here, grande means big) but in terms of height…

Other notes

Xavi and Iniesta sat in the front, with Messi between them.  Puyol sat next to Piqué (huge surprise there), and Iker sat next to David Villa.

VDB also had presenting duties, handing out the women’s coach of the year award.

There was also a tribute to the World Cup, ending with the World Cup winners, and that made me get all emotional again, seeing Iniesta’s goal and Iker raising up the trophy.

To end:

Carles Puyol dethrones Iker Casillas as the resident saint of the national team.

  1. poor Xavi & Iniesta. They look so sad in the top 2 pictures. Don’t worry guys…we feel ur pain. :'{

Also, who’s the guy sitting behind VDB in the 3rd pic? Doesn’t it look like he’s about to cry?

“one point Puyol dropped his award” <- wonder if that little tidbit will make Pique's twitter?

lol…thanks for the laugh about St. Puyol. It cheered me up after such a sad day for Spain.

  2. Una, your caps are hilarious! “Carles dethrones Iker as the saint on the national team”. Ha ha. And I don’t know where you get your tidbits of Carles dropping his award, etc., but I love it! And that’s why I love your blog! Go Iker for wearing his heart on his sleeve. And for Mou for recognizing Xavi’s career.

Pique really is tall! I mean, he even makes Iker look short. He must make the bajitos look even shorter!

I teared up at the WC clips.

    • Agreed on the saint joke :) Una, you are quite observant which makes this blog a joy to read. If you had not pointed it out, I wouldn’t have noticed the light framing Puyi’s mane!

  3. my gosh!!! i got teary eyed with what Xavi said…. he’s the best!! And you’re right.. They are a group! We should start cheering up again because this is not a loss for us. It is actually proof of what a team really is. I love this!!!

  4. Una, you must have been up all night putting this set of posts together! Thanks so much!

I wanted Xavi and VDB to win as well, but I really can’t argue with the results. Messi is just a phenomenon and no one else comes close. It really couldn’t happen to a nicer boy. And much as I dislike Mourinho, he is a great coach and had a terrific year. What he did was very difficult and he deserves the award. I was also very impressed with his special mention of Xavi deserving the award, that was classy and appreciated.

On a lighter note, I love that picture in the Other Notes section of Puyol and Pique–their hair looks so soft and shiny, I want to run my hands all through it!

  5. woke up at 2am to watch this and i’m glad they did not focus on xavi or andres after leo won el balon. i’m pretty sure they were sad. xavi especially. i agree with mourinho. this could have been a great award for his career.

also, i really loved the quote from andres’s grandmother. he DOES pass the ball to messi for him to score. both him and xavi.

    QUE TRISTE :”'(

  6. THANX UNA!!!! This is helping get through the horrible feeling of deception (and I’m not even Spanish) … They should have let the fans vote… that way Xavi would have won…. & I love what Mou said about Xavi … and it’s the truth… I also like when he said … I’m not the best in the world … I’m just one of many … Best of 2010 yes but not the world… OR something like I can’t remember right now… I saw it yesterdy…

BTW you lost me … I read it like 3 times… How did Puyi dethroned Iker???

and I love the twits…. they are the best!!!

  7. Sant Carles – hahaha It’s the strong hair against Germany!!!

    The boys all looked great.

    Thanks Una

  8. Hahaha, thank you so much for this. Brilliant post.

I’m so very disappointed about the Ballon d’Or… I just don’t understand their criteria, I guess. Maybe your theory about the team is right. I don’t know. It’s just sad that more understated talents aren’t recognized… sure Messi is great and scores tons and tons of goals but that’s not what should matter most… Xavi placing third really just shows that people vote for the most obvious player. It bothers me…. clearly voters did not vote for Messi on the basis of the World Cup (where he was not successful at all) but rather his playing at Barcelona… where Xavi is absolutely essential to his success. Xavi won La Liga with Barcelona, was an essential part of the Spanish team… so, won MORE titles than Messi… not to mention he’s like ten years older and this could have been his last chance to win the award. No justice!

Did you notice that Raúl’s name was trending on Twitter last night, higher than Messi’s or anyone else’s? It was people tweeting about Spain being robbed of the award… saying Raúl is another example of an amazing Spanish player who never received it.

    • Really? Raul’s name was trending? Gosh… He really was, and probably still is the best player that Spanish and the world ever has. He’s my favorite of all time…

  9. Iker’s quote summed up my feelings completely. I was shocked when i read (cause Pep opened the card backwards, totally cute by the way) that Messi won. Yes he is great but winning the world cup had to have meant more. It did to me :)

As always thank you for doing what you do! We really appreciate it :)

  10. Thank you for putting this together.

Una, how does Piqué know English. That impresses me greatly.

Also, I am still sad for Xavi and I cannot believe Mou said something so nice. That makes me like him a bit more.

  11. Does anyone know where can I watch/download this?

  12. Thank you. Now I have to go find YouTube footage of his speaking English. How fun!

  13. Amazing post Una!!! I’m also dissapointed that Xavi lost, he really deserved it!!!

    Piqué looks oh so good!

yeah, Carles looks so saint like in that last picture!!!

  14. Thank you for this una! I am a barcelona fan but im kinda sad that messi won the award. I was really rooting for xavi!

  15. why Puyi always seems to be with wet hair?
anyway, they´re all where amazing in Zurich!
i felt bad for xavi, he deserved that award so muuuuuuuch! i hope this award come next year. just like mou said: he deserved the award for his career!
thanks a lot Una for this great informations and everything. love your blog

  16. “Puyol – (To Piqué) You are also the más grande (here, grande means big) but in terms of height…”

I was kinda hoping that you would say that Grande could mean something else, if you know what I mean ;) hehehehee… *mind in gutter*

  17. I was a bit sad and surprised, too, not to see a Spaniard win the Ballon d’Or. Of course Messi is a deserved winner but he sure profits a lot from being on a team with Xavi or Iniesta who will never get all the glory.

  18. I keep reading about all the people whose votes counted for Xabi Alonso instead of Xavi. I wonder if he would have come in second if all the voties were for Xavi and not Xabi. I don’t think he would have overtaken Messi?

  19. what does ‘moooc moooc’ mean in the players tweets??
