the awards keep coming…
(Is that a smile from David Villa?)
Marca handed out the Marca awards at the Hotel Ritz this afternoon, which honored the best players of the 2009-10 La Liga season.
Iker Casillas won the special Marca award for being the best player in the World Cup, although he dedicated his award to the entire team: “as captain of the national team and representative of an extraordinary group, I don’t want to forget anyone that was at the World Cup, teammates, coaching staff, and all the people that enjoyed watching the Spanish national team.” Iker also said that the success of the team was due to the “collective.”
Although this doesn’t have anything to do with La Roja, I’ll add that Víctor Valdés picked up the Zamora award (his second consecutive one, and third overall) for having the lowest goals to game ratio, and David Villa took home the Zarra award for being the top Spanish goal scorer in the past campaign, with 21 goals for Valencia. They received their awards in Barcelona, although they will have to travel to Madrid tomorrow for La Roja.
And according to Álvaro Arbeloa himself, he’s optimistic that he’ll be able to open the Fiestas del Pilar in Zaragoza from the balcony of the town hall as pregonero on Oct. 9, a day after the Lithuania game in Salamanca (which also happens to be where he was born). He said he would talk to the coach about letting him take a couple of hours off because reading the “pregón” of the event is something that “any person from Aragón dreams about.” Álvaro grew up in Zaragoza and considers it his home. Plus, he met his wife there and they also got married in the city! Álvaro received the sports merit medal from the government of Aragón on Monday, at the Miraflores school in Zaragoza, which also happened to be where he went to school, since he lived right across the street. Arbeloa said he was “very happy and proud” to receive this distinction.
Meanwhile, La Roja was also honored with the golden “Averroes” award from the city of Córdoba, which Vicente del Bosque accepted on behalf of the team.
